iCal and Mail: If Only They Could Get Married to Gmail

iCal and Mail: If Only They Could Get Married to GmailI recently registered a new domain that I wanted to use specifically for emails.  Why, you may ask?  Well, I was tired of using 50 different email addresses for every occasion. So, I wanted one generic email that could be used for all purposes, whether business or personal. I love both Google and Apple and was happy to integrate my Gmail account with my Macbook Pro.  But I soon found out that the two would not exactly be one.

There are a few features in iCal and Mail that I find myself using quite often. They are notes and to-dos.  However, I came to find out a few things when I was trying to use these features.  One, when you modify a note, Gmail treats each modification like a new conversation, so you will end up with several threads connected to one note. Now, there are a few tricks and tips out there that can help you maneuver around this issue, however, there is no solution for the to-dos problem.

No matter solution I try, I am unable to create a to-do in Mail.  Before I go on, I think I need to clarify a previous statement. When I stated, “there is no solution for the to-dos problem,” that is not entirely true, but what I meant was that there is no solution for me.

Mail recognizes that my Google Calendar is my default calendar for events and to-dos because no other iCal calendar is active. Since there is an issue with creating to-dos with Gmail, to-dos in Mail does not respond. So then, if I want to keep my integration with Gmail, the only solution is to not use to-dos and go without. Since this will interfere with my workflow, going without is not a feasible option.

The only alternative was to go back to my MobileMe account.  So then, I transferred all of the messages from my Gmail account over to my MobileMe account. Then, I set up email forwarding in Gmail along with the option to archive incoming messages.  Lastly, I finished setting up Mail to connect to MobileMe by IMAP, set my reply email to my Gmail address, and then setup sending email with Gmail’s smtp server. I would rather use Gmail but at the moment it isn’t possible.  However, the current solution works great, and I have had no issues.

Just Purchased the Late 2008 Macbook Pro

macbook 11 Just Purchased the Late 2008 Macbook ProOn last night I decided to go to the Apple store to purchase the new Late 2008, 15″ Macbook Pro.  I was trying to wait until next week, but I could not hold off any longer.  I must say that I did not know if I would like the new Macbook Pro.  I’ve been hesitant from purchasing a Macbook Pro in the past because I was not sure if I would like the aluminum look.  But when the new Macbook and Macbook Pro came out, the aluminum seemed a little more polished.  And since I needed a more powerful machine due to the fact that I am a power user, I had no choice but to purchase the Macbook Pro.
